Suggested supplies: not mandatory!
I would prefer students use tools and materials they are familiar with, for those with less experience I have suggested supplies listed below:
Oil Colors:
- titanium white
- alizarin crimson
- cadmium red light
- cadmium orange
- cadmium yellow medium
- yellow ochre
- terra rosa
- burnt sienna
- viridian green
- cobalt blue
- ultramarine blue deep
- ivory black
A smaller “limited palette” of colors may also be used:
- titanium white
- alizarin crimson
- cadmium orange medium
- cadmium yellow medium
- ultramarine blue deep
If one is buying oil paint for the first time I recommend student grade paints : “Winton” series by Windsor and Newton
Other supplies:
- Gamsol or another odorless paint thinner
- about a half dozen various sized traditional bristle brushes ( I prefer long flats)
- a couple of small synthetic rounds for the smallest shapes
- paper towels or rags
- bucket for thinner
- palette for mixing color
- a painting knife and paper towels or cloth rags.
Canvas/ supports:
- Students may use any support they prefer.
- I prefer oil primed linen canvas, usually mounted to gatorfoam.
- Canvas panels and gessoed hardboard are less expensive options.
Students will need two or three “medium” sized supports each day. I consider these standard sizes to be of “medium” size …14′ x 18″ , 16″ x 20″ , up to 18″ x 24″
